Welcome to Manjula Yoga, where we delve into the enriching world of yoga to help you find balance, peace, and well-being in your life. In this blog post, we will explore the practice of Nadishodhana Pranayama, a powerful breathing technique that can bring about profound relaxation and balance to both the body and mind.

Nadishodhana Pranayama, also known as alternate nostril breathing, is a fundamental pranayama practice in yoga. It involves the sequential inhalation and exhalation through each nostril, aiming to balance the flow of prana (life force energy) in the body. This technique is particularly effective in calming the nervous system, reducing stress, and promoting mental clarity.

To perform Nadishodhana Pranayama, follow these steps:

  1. Find a comfortable seated position, either on the floor with crossed legs or on a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Sit up tall with your spine straight but relaxed.

  2. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and relax your body and mind.

  3. Using your right hand, bring your index and middle fingers to rest between your eyebrows. Use your thumb to gently close your right nostril and your ring finger to close your left nostril.

  4. Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale deeply through your left nostril, counting to four.

  5. Once you've completed the inhalation, close your left nostril with your ring finger, release your thumb from your right nostril, and exhale fully through your right nostril, counting to eight.

  6. Inhale deeply through your right nostril for a count of four.

  7. Close your right nostril with your thumb again, release your ring finger from your left nostril, and exhale fully through your left nostril for a count of eight.

  8. This completes one round of Nadishodhana Pranayama. Repeat for several rounds, gradually increasing the duration of inhalation and exhalation as you become more comfortable with the practice.
